Sukhbaatar square is situated in the front of Government Palace and is the main square of Ulaanbaatar city. The square was named after revolutionary leader Sukhbaatar, who led the Mongolian force during the independence movement against the Chinese occupation in 1921. In the middle of the square, 14 m tall equestrian statue of Sukhbaatar was built by famous sculptor Choimbol, honouring his leadership in 1946. You might witness a wedding or a graduation ceremony or traditionally dressed locals celebrating their special moment.
Nowadays, the square is famous for its 250 metres square exactly equal four-sided shape.
The Government Palace was built on the north side of Sukhbaatar Square in 1956. In 2006, the Bronze statue of Chinggis Khaan and his successors Ogoodoi, Khublai Khaan’s statues along with two warrior’s equestrian statues were placed in the front of the Government Palace. The Government Palace houses various state organs such as the parliament and offices of its members, as well as the offices of the president and prime minister.
