Gorkhi Terelj National Park is located 70 km north east to Ulaanbaatar, less than 1.5 hour drive on tarmac road. This is stunning rocky mountain formations, covered by larch forest which is a continuous part of Siberian Taiga. The area is famous for the Turtle Rock, a gigantic turtle shaped rock formation that witnesses the power of natural erosion of wind and sun. A part of the park is a popular for domestic and international day visitors for staying at choice of Ger camps with modern facilities and a wide range of cuisine. Popular activities include horseback-riding, hiking and rock climbing. The area is especially suitable for those who have short of time and would like to get away from busy business meetings and conferences in Uaanbaatar.
Turtle rock ( Originally Mungut Tsokhio) is an iconic natural monument or name card of the national park.
When you travel just over 3 km to the north east to Turtle Rock, you reach Aryabal Meditation Temple perfectly sits together with its surrounding rocky mountains. The temple was rebuilt in 2000 at the original site of a meditation temple that was occupied by Buddhist monks since the early 19th century and destroyed by communists in the 1930’s. There is a path leading to the temple along with 72 signs of 144 Buddhist teachings, written in English and Mongolian. As ascending to the temple, you can enjoy tranquil setting of Alpine meadow with abundant wild flowers.
