The Northern part of Mongolia is the most traveled destination among locals and tourists. The highlight of Northern Mongolia, an alpine region bordering the forests of Siberia, is pristine Khuvsgul Lake, known as Mongolia’s “dark blue pearl” and Darkhad valley – there are over 200 lakes surrounded by high mountains covered with forest and extensive marshland, which is a home of reindeer people -Tsaatan ethnic minority. Many ethnic groups of Mongolia live in this region. You can see Tsaatan (Reindeer herders) people’s lives. Also there are many unique cultural, historical and natural sights.
Beyond the capital, it is easier to travel through northern Mongolia because the majority of its cities are connected by paved highways and train networks. There is nearly hourly bus service between the second and third largest cities in Mongolia, Erdenet and Darkhan, as well as stops on the Trans-Mongolian section of the Trans-Siberian Railway. Another stop on the Trans-Mongolian is Sühbaatar. Every city in the area has at least daily bus service to Ulaanbaatar’s Dragon Center. Only the farthest city, Mörön, gets regular flights because getting there is so simple; during the busiest summer travel season, there may be as many as three flights daily from UB from all three domestic airlines.
