Elsen Tasarkhai Sand Dunes lies at the foot of Khugnu Khaan mountains and part of Khugnu Tarna Nature Reserve. The sand dunes stretch 80km from north to south and 5km at the widest. Although the dunes are small compared to Khongor Sand Dunes, the area offers some of the varied landscapes in central Mongolia with green meadow, semi-arid hills and sand dunes against a backdrop of the granite mountain.
As the main road to the west crosses through the sand dunes, Elsen Tasarkhai is an easily accessible and well-visited place for Mongolians and travellers alike. With full of life during the summer, local nomads stay close to the dunes to offer camel riding activities for domestic and international visitors.
The area has rich fauna and flora. Hawks, falcons, steppe eagle, whooper swan, sandpiper, poliver, and lapwing are some of the birds you can spot in the area.
You may choose either Ger camp or authentic homestay with a nomadic family.
