Its location being in the heart of Asia, Mongolia has several theatres presenting musical orchestra pieces, ballet and theatrical performances. The major base of theatrical industry has been established thanks to USSR’s very close relations with the Mongolian People’s Republic during the communist years.
The State Musical Drama Theatre was founded as an outcome of a cooperation between Russian and Mongolian specialists in 1932. Then in 1962 it was separated into the State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet and the State Academic Drama Theatre, which are now the main two institutions consistently conducting classical performances. Some others are National Academic Ensemble of Folk Dance and Music, Mongolian State Puppet Theatre, The Moving Theatre “NAURUZ”, The Mongolian Theatre Museum.
The State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet play timely European pieces like Swan Lake and The Nutcracker by Tschaikovsky, The Limpid Stream by Shostakovich, Don Giovanni and The Magic Flute by Mozart, also Mongolian original operas such as the first Mongolian opera composed by S.Damdinsuren’s “Three Sad Hills”, B.Sharav’s “Chinggis Khaan”, D.Janchiv’s “Blue Silk Deel” etc.
“THREE DRAMATIC CHARACTERS”
This opera is an ever-beloved Mongolian romance opera written by the renowned poet D.Natsagdorj along with the music by the prominent composer S.Damdinsuren. This masterpiece, which tells us a story about love between Yunden and Nansalmaa, Khorolmaa’s malicious jealousy and Balgan’s despair of love, was first written as a theatrical drama piece in 1934, represented in 1942 as a musical drama, and finally in 1950 as an opera piece. By watching this opera, one can be thoroughly introduced with the Mongolian traditional clothing, culture, the nation’s psychology and their approach to romantic affairs, household, lifestyle. One must taste genuine Mongolian originality from the “Three Dramatic Characters”.

“URAN KHAS”
Uran Khas is an original ballet by the well-known Mongolian conductor, composer and violinist Jamiyan Chluun. It was first staged by conductor Ch.Jamsranjav and choreographer B.Jamiyandagva in the year of 1973. This ballet, which was inspired by a true-life story of an ordinary man from Khuvsgul province, who desired to fly with hand-made wings, has been performed unceasingly for 45 years. Sentimental, eloquent, a true visual masterpiece!
